Acting Agencies Arm Yourself with Information
If you talk to people in the acting industry you would find that most of them have been ripped off by acting agencies at one time or the other. And that is why you need to be extra careful to save yourself from getting ripped by some acting agency. Let us have a look at a few suggestions that could help you.
First thing first, if an acting agency is asking for some joining fee, it is trying to rip you off. If you find advertisements in newspapers offering you place on their books as they have lots of work in films and TV are most probably trying to do you in. The same goes for acting agency that asks you to get your shot taken through them at some fee.
Most of the acting wannabes are utterly dissatisfied with their acting agencies. They complain that they have been completely forgotten and they are never being called for work and they are sitting at home waiting for calls from their acting agency. The advice that I would like to give would be not to join the acting agency which advertises. Just think how many people like you might have answered this ad. There is no way they could provide work to all of them. They are not there to give you work and give guidance to your acting career. They are there to make money only. No genuine acting agency needs to advertise and ask for joining fees. Genuine acting agency doesn't need to take your money to join their books and they also don't ask you to get your shots done through them for some money. They can at the most recommend someone who they think is a good photographer but it is never binding on you to accept their recommendation. If you are looking for a genuine acting agency you would have to make some effort. You would have to research a fair bit to find the acting agency which could make your career. You might like to ask your peers or people who have been in the field for long. It would take some time but you should have patience. In the meanwhile you need to hone your acting skills and build some kind of acting resume. You can also opt for taking some acting classes and work on some acting projects. That would improve your acting skills and you should carry on with your hunt for a good acting agency. When you would find one, you would be ready for it. Acting agencies don't work for free. But they would only take their commission once they have helped you get a job. Their fees might hover around 10% to 15% but nothing more than that. If an acting agency asks for more, you are being ripped off. Try to find some other acting agency.
